Review of Lymelife (2008) by Bob M — 09 May 2009
This was the week to avoid depressing movies so I might be a little biased with this one. Lymelife is a god damn melodrama that is so real and next-doorish that it hits really hard.
Together with Revolutionary road, Lymelife is the second movie in less than a year that really takes the emptiness of suburban life and showcases it for what it really is.
Scenes of homes full of empty feelings, little or no interest in each other yet everything disguised behind big houses and commuter trains.
Lymelife is a movie everyone should watch when thinking about making the trek to the suburbs. There is a shallowness and solitude that eludes cities. Frankly I will take noise, crowds and pollution in a city any day of the week. The 'burbs creep me out.
An interesting point about this movie are the Culkin brothers. After dozens of childish and made for TV films these kids have landed a bunch of roles in good indie movies. It's pretty hard to forgive them however for home alone.
Lymelife is certainly recommendable but nothing to get out of your way to watch. Good, not great and quite forgettable.
