Review of Lust, Caution (2007) by Julie A — 27 Jan 2009
As far as explicitness..I thought .it was rather tepid compared to the psyhological pornography of say, Hang Sang Soo(Korean...and to be truthful, to me Hang Sang Soo does something new with that genre...he gives sex a depth in social terms...reveals it's psychological dimension in capital societies)..I was against paying money to see this...an' so I saw it here online at no expense...I did not want to denigrate a culture, or a person, I felt a strong allure towards.. the film was released during a time I was enchanted by a Chinese gal ..even though at first impulse, as a man and honest one, the draw is for me is definitily entangled with the erotic ...
The film is well crafted, if not rather simple in it's narrative... I watched it without subtitles..an' enjoyed my growing comprehension of the language....Ang Lee made my favorite "Hulk" movie and I will continue supporting that position against the tide. But I sense Hollywood indulgences are begining to corrupt Chinese films and their aestheics...take for example the over-indulgent imagery of Zhang Yimou's most recent works...but that's just the top of the hill...I know there are many young filmmakers in China these days hungry for a shot...and I hope to discover and find their works as I fortunately will be traveling to China and taking refuge and residence there in a couple of weeks.
