SPOILERS: a long drawn out movie, like its long drawn out sex scenes does not make for a good film. This is another epic Ang Lee let down. I really wanted this movie to be good, afterall the plotline is from one of Asia's most popular writers, Eileen Chang.

However, it really fails to deliver. The editing is insanely slow. Wheover edited this movie didn't edit it at all, the pace makes one feel that they were sitting at a mahjong table for 8 hours with people they dislike.

True, it has nice cinematography, but I can think of better movies that do. The sex scenes are there, and rather long. The only emotion I saw was that the main character (Yee) was a callus jerk, and highly aggressive.

I would argue that the sex scenes are boarderline rape (if not rape). The girl comes across as a poor confused woman in the end....torn between her stupid idea that this aggressive creep loves her and her job as a haphazard spy.

It made me mad at her. There was no love between them. When does buying someone a gift and agressively having sex equal love? Yee deserved to die. In the end you are just annoyed at this whole movie, and having sat through it.

Avoid if possible, your higher intellect will approve of you not sitting through it. Instead go read the novella. Leave Ang Lee to his 100 hours of sex scene shooting alone.
