Review of Lust, Caution (2007) by Steve H — 05 May 2012
Left me very disappointed. It just wasn't that interesting - average I would say. I was giving this director another chance as I really didn't like the silly flying/ ballet of 'Crouching Tiger'.
On the plus side - good lead performances and some nice period shots and atmosphere. The big negative is that although not boring, the film has fits and starts and never really keeps the interest. One of the problems is the 4 years ago, 3 years ago etc.
...and after 2 and a half hours it would have been nice to have a memorable ending. Also the slow start works well (the women around the table with some nice dialogue) but the pace remained tediously slow and lacked any excitement.
Still it's better than most Hollywood junk.....but not half as good as some reviewers are saying. Nice costumes but the story is pretty forgettable. The sex scenes were needed to give the film some excitement.
...giving the appearance that something was happening. I can see it working in a book, but a film? Nah, overrated but not bad.
