Review of Lucy (2014) by Cameron H — 01 Feb 2016
Lucy follows a young party girl who is forced to be a drug mile for a mysterious agency. The package then leaks and creates her to access 100% of her cerebral capacity. (Humans only use 10% supposedly). Lucy is a rather clever triller that delivers both thrills and a great premise. While some of the theories were a bit thin, the thrilling sequences make for a slim layer on top of its plot holes. Luc Besson's directorial style is very unusual. He brings in random scenes from wildlife or part of the world as a metaphor for what's unraveling before our eyes. For example, as Johansson delivers the case, the scene cuts to cheetahs stalking gazelle. Her being the gazelle and the drug agents being the cheetahs, it makes for a very clever take on thrilling scenes. Although the movie had it's not so great moments, Scarlett Johansson makes up for that entirely. Her performance was so wonderful as the scared to the strong independent woman she becomes. Due to the holes on the movie, Johansson carries the movie on her back the entire time. In other words, without her this movie would be garbage.
Consensus: Lucy delivers great thrills and a stunning performance from Johansson, although Besson's theoretical plot holes are uneven. Jo does indeed succeed on carrying the film entirely.
