Review of Lucy (2014) by Kurtiss K — 09 Aug 2015
It steals concepts from various superhero films, and is basically a female version of "Limitless", but when Besson let's the action do the talking it's more or less enjoyable. It's hard to tell if Johansson was told to act robotic, or that's just how she decided to act, but it kind of turns off any emotional depth that could have been gained from a person who is "feeling everything all at once".
The film falters when it allows Lucy to do incomprehensible actions simply to drive home the plot. A scene involving a discussion between her and Norman (Freeman) is particularly laughable in it's absurdity.
Had it not taken itself so seriously it may have been a fun romp, but it's constant need to explain itself and develop a sense of powerlessness in the wake of someone who is basically all-powerful hinders its potential.
