Review of Lucy (2014) by Michael L — 01 Mar 2015
I'm surprised by the negative reviews here.
Granted, the science IS a bit..."off"... but to be fair...this IS a work of fiction. If you do like the strong, silent type of hero (which I do very much) then this should be a pretty fun film to watch.
People seem put off by the lead characters' "lack of vulnerability"... both physically and emotionally... but I'd argue her lack of physical and emotional vulnerability is the whole point of the film.
It's an exploration of what the next couple of thousand years of evolution, in concert with the unfathomable increases in scientific, medical and technological knowledge, could perhaps do to human beings' mindsets and abilities in the future.
At first, the character is fearful, vulnerable, emotional, lost, and has ZERO control of what is happening to her. But she loses all these qualities very suddenly. Without these hang-ups, she is free to become (and to show us) what a human quintessentially strives to be... rational, scientific, knowledgeable, and controlling. Not in the sense of "having"...but of "being".
I LOVE Lucy, and I love her emotional coldness and ultra-rational perspective of reality. She's kind of become my hero XD.
Yes, the plot holes can be glaringly obvious, (seems murder isn't even considered a misdemeanor in this film) ...but I find the action scenes fairly enjoyable, and the main character is pretty damn cool.
