Review of Lucky You (2007) by Ugoma G — 28 Jul 2008
There is a moment about a third of the way into 'Lucky You' which tells you everything you need to know about Huck Cheaver (eric bana) - it's where Billie (drew barrymore) calls him a "sick pony", and Huck corrects her to himself (and to us) as she walks away "sick dog". There's also a moment where Billie L.C. (Robert Duvall) - "maybe winning and losing aren't as complicated as giving and receiving" - which tells you everything you need to know about her.
These two characters form the centre of 'Lucky You' - the 2007 film ostensibly about Poker from Curtis(LA Confidential)Hanson. That so much can be conveyed with such subtlety of direction, and confident, assured dialogue is a sure indicator that this is a *good* movie. By the point those lines are heard, we know these characters, and despite Huck's obvious failings, he's charming enough to keep you onside. Drew Barrymore is probably the best I've ever seen her, and I usually think she's a bit rubbish. She pulls off one of those smart, funny, seemingly vulnerable roles which make you fall completely in love with them almost immediately.
There's several different character relationships in this movie, one of which I haven't spoiled in this review, it's small surprise, but nice enough to keep safe.
I could drone on about several great, great scenes, but I'll leave at this is a confident, assured movie, with some fine acting and wonderful dialogue. Not quite *great* but excellent all the same. If you like poker, (i'm indifferent) then it's all gravy.
Recommended.
