Review of Lucky Number Slevin (2006) by J K — 05 Dec 2009
This film SOOOO much wants to be a Quentin Tarentino movie, but lacks the raw power and brutality needed to make it a truly great gangster movie, but overall not a bad film, either. One criticism is that it tries to be mirthy but comes across as almost too lighthearted, even comedic.
Considering the carnage of this film it definitely lacks the edginess of a trademark gangster movie, which really makes no sense whatsoever. I liked the film for its cast, which is its strength. Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci and a non-annoying roles by Josh Hartnett and Lucy Liu.
Hartnett can act when he's not trying to play the superstud and he is definitely not what he seems in this film. I really liked the plot twists and acting. The scene to watch for is a cool dialogue exchange between Freeman and Kingsley's characters.
It's a definite treat watching two master actors showing off their chops.
