Review of Lucky Miles (2007) by Garry J — 07 Aug 2007
A boatload of illegal immigrants are dumped onto a desert beach, thousands of miles from Perth. This is a story of how they attempt to survive not only against the harsh Australian bush, but also each other.
At times dark and often whimsical, this tale shows us the kind of hell that refugees go to, often willingly, in their quest for 'Australia', not so much the place, but the idea. It thankfully doesn't fall into predictable cliches characterized by other 'journey' movies.
The subtle humour sprinkled onto the characters and their situation makes this especially engaging. The film perhaps runs a little too long, however boredom is rare as there's enough interaction between the characters and their environment to keep you interested.
At times the characters spoke of political issues and cultural fiction a little too expertly, giving the impression of fakeness.
