Review of Lower Learning (2008) by Darren D — 23 Feb 2009
Odd little movie that doesn't bother explaining the plot in detail until an hour in. To that point, it is an amusing string of vignettes set at a deteriorating elementary school, where only only Jason Biggs (and Eva to a lesser or greater extent) gives a damn.
So various scenes play out with kids being used, kids being blamed, kids being confessed to, and adults acting juvenile whilst kids act adult. Anyway, some of these scenes worth, some don't. But after an hour or so, there is barely a REAL character in the film, let alone one that the audience can root for.
Then the plot kicks into gear somewhat and rushes to an easily foretold conclusion. A few easy changes could have fixed some of the film's structural issues (introducing Jason Biggs as a new vice principal instead of a passive onlooker to the destruction of children's lives) but the tenor of the script and direction are too caustic for all but the truly cynical.
