Review of Loving Vincent (2017) by Fred W — 27 Dec 2017
The story was interesting but the 'artistic' choices made it so hard to love. It feels too much like a bad cover album by an amateur music school band. We've grown up with Van Gogh's depictions of these people and to change them to recognizable actors was a poor choice in my opinion. They could have easily used the live action reference footage and painted the people as Van Gogh did. Also take the beginning scene. Van Gogh painted in a broken/warped perspective style for a reason, the film nails it at first but then relies on reference footage and goes back to realistic correct perspective. If this had been a James Cameron production, like Titanic, he would have made sure every single detail was just as Van Gogh had intended. This isn't the Van Gogh I've grown up loving my whole life. And then their is the black and white footage... It feels like they were running out of time and used it as a cut corner filler.
Overall this is a fair and noble attempt and was a good idea. The execution just falls too flat for me to love.
