Review of Loving (2016) by Tatsuhito K — 28 Nov 2016
I liked this film very much and that is mostly due to its fantastically understated performances by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga. From the moment they first appeared on screen, I totally bought them as Richard and Mildred Loving and that their feelings and love for each other were very palpable.
Having been slightly disappointed by his previous film "Midnight Special", it was nice to see writer-director Jeff Nichols coming back strong with such a powerful and important film that deals with marriage equality and racism, two social issues that are still relevant to this day.
It may feel slow or seem dull for some people, but I loved the way it took its time to unfold the story and didn't gloss over its real-life tale. There was never a moment in "Loving" that felt like a quintessential Oscar-bait drama, and the pay off is quietly moving.
It's great.
