Review of Loving (2016) by Robby K — 09 Dec 2016
Carried by the two lead performances, especially Ruth Negga's, "Loving" tells it's tale in a toned down way that just let's the story show itself naturally. It doesn't feel as big as it maybe should, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as it stops the arc of the movie from being too familiar.
It is however, often difficult to tell when each scene is taking place. Sometimes jumping years into the future without any warning, which could not only take you out of the movie, but it could also make you misread some scenes entirely.
Nick Kroll is also somewhat miscast in the film and that's not a knock against him per se, it's just that when you get a typically comical actor in a more serious role, it has to be a near perfect fit for it seem natural.
Overall "Loving" is very well acted, and has a subject worthy of it's own movie, it's just got a few extra things that should have been tidied up.
