Review of Loving (2016) by Noah Z — 19 Dec 2016
Truly awful movie. Ruth Negga and Marton Csokas are the only good performances in the movie. Nick Kroll is the worst casting decision I have ever witnessed and Joel Edgarton plays the reserved working man role too well giving Richard loving absolutely no character.
There are way too many shots of Richard's bricklaying. The use of music in this film only adds to the pile of filth that is Loving. There are way too many shots of silence and eyes darting all over the screen.
Loving attempts to tell a story of two simple people so madly in love that their Supreme Court case gets pushed to the background, and fails miserably. There are no sparks between Edgarton and Negga, it's hard to believe that they are married.
Negga's powerful performance is overshadowed by every other part this horrible movie. In the end Loving comes off as a poor retelling of an incredibly significant case that shaped American life.
