Review of Loving (2016) by Nick D — 10 Jan 2017
This kind of big-emotions, morality tale kinda needs a director who will lean into those motifs (Spielberg, Ang Lee). Nichols, whom I adore, is really too patient a director for such a naturally slow moving story, awkwardly mixing minimalism & drama.
I get that the tone matches the anonymity of the case itself, but to a fault. Still, there's much to admire. Both leads are fantastic, the music is great, the humor (while too rare) works, and the story deserves telling.
And the "Tell the judge I love my wife" line is an insta-classic.
