Review of Loving (2016) by Rob M — 01 Sep 2017
Jeff Nichols tells the true story of the trials and tribulations of Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga) and their fight to keep their illegal marriage alive in the state of Virginia.
Nichols' approach is rudimentary and therefore gives more attention to the lead characters and the lush scenery of the Virginia countryside. Edgerton and Negga are elegant and subliminal in their roles and show sides to their characters we may not have known existed.
While the supporting cast are two-dimensional in nature we realize the point of the film is to make our main protagonists come to life, which is done to full effect here.
