Review of Lovely & Amazing (2002) by Jody B — 05 Oct 2009
This is a delightful comedy about the low self-esteem and insecurities of a mother (Brenda Blethyn) and her three daughters (Emily Mortimer, Catherine Keener, and Raven Goodwin).
Elizabeth (Mortimer) is an actress who obsessively frets over her body until she has an actor (Dermot Mulroney) evaluate her body part by part.
Michelle (Keener) deals with her cheating husband by engaging in an affair with a 17-year old boy (Jake Gyllenhaal).
Annie (Goodwin) is an adopted little black girl who gets her hair straightened in an attempt to look more like her white sisters.
After the mother experiences a life-changing event, the three very different sisters come together in a way they never imagined they could.
An effective study on family ties and how they affect who we are.
