Review of Lovelace (2013) by Hyderali S — 29 Aug 2013
Started well but ends very badly.
I don't know anything about Linda Boreman aka Linda Lovelace. After checking out the trailer & watching 'Boogey Nights' (yet to review) few months back I felt that this might be another good movie to reveal behind the scenes of pornographic industry. First, I checked out some background about this lady Linda Boreman on net & the things which I came to know is that she was forcefully dragged into porn via his abusive husband & after few years she quit acting & became anti-porn activist (as to what I read on net).
I was expecting something good from the movie after reading the real life story of Linda but unfortunately I felt like I was cheated. The film set in 1970 where Linda Boreman dancing in skateboard club with her friend gets introduced to Chuck. After abandoning her parents she starts living with him. In between there were some nude scenes which were totally unnecessary. The scene then cuts to after 6 months where Chuck gots locked up in jail & due to unemployment he drags her into porn industry controlling all her finance & abusing her in every way possible. One day she ran away & gets solace under producer of her porn movie. She quits acting & published her first own biography 'Ordeal'. We then see Linda boreman with her husband & kid & getting back to her parents house.
I don't know in how many porn movies she (Linda Boreman) acted because this (Lovelace) movie was totally focused on her debut movie 'Deep Throat' which grossed more than $600 at that time & she got only $1250. This is what the director shows in the post-credit. The movie starts well, where you get the feel of 70's era. Costumes, cars, houses & television all designed to make you feel like you were in 70's.
The plot got muddled from the second half. Some scenes were shown without providing details & the reason behind it. Like, how Linda meet his next husband? What happened to Chuck? Why was he not chasing her? And am sure there are lots when you see the movie.
As per the acting, Chuck played by Peter Sarsgaard was terrific. He got those charms of seducing & anger of abusing. Amanda Seyfried was fantastic. You can see the girl really practiced hard to get into this character & that really plays off but the script is something the director must have think twice before directing the movie. There was one surprise, Sharon Stone as Linda Boreman's mother. It was hard to recognize her.
Don't ever compare this movie with 'Boogey Nights'.
