Review of Lovelace (2013) by Tiffany D — 12 Aug 2013
Lovelace takes on a tough subject: Linda Lovelace and her claims about her involvement in porn. There's a lot to love with what they've done here - Seyfried nailed the risky role, making the controversial star subject sympathetic.
The supporting case was strong - Azaria, Cannavale, and Noth as the porn producers and Stone and Patrick as her conservative parents all delivered - Sarsgaard as the horrible husband, too... The art direction nailed it - visually, it submerges the viewer into the era - and the music is fantastic.
The problem lies in the storytelling... there's just so much missing. It does a fine job of showcasing Linda's own claims of being a victim of her husband and of circumstance - but it doesn't tell the other side: her drug addiction and her BEASTIALITY films, namely (not to mention all that must have ended up on the cutting room floor, like Sarah Jessica Parker's entire role).
So, as entertainment, it is a good story - not happy, but compelling --- as a truthful biopic, not so much... still, I did enjoy watching it, so I give it the full 4 stars (over the 3.5 I strongly considered).
It's no Boogie Nights, but I could seriously see Seyfried getting some recognition for this.
