Review of Lovelace (2013) by Orlando O — 18 Nov 2013
It could be a really interesting biopic...but is it honest? Who knows. I'm not going to bother with the research anyway, so I can't really write an honest review.
There are many haters of this movie, and I do remind you, it's still puritanical America. A porn actress? That whore must have been a witch! Well, there's likely more to the story than that. Did the movie make Lovelace out to be cleaner than she was in real life? Maybe. Maybe not. I hope, for the sake of honesty, they portrayed her in a realistic light. I guess there is a certain amount of optimism there.
I knew of the history, so watching the first 1/3 or 1/2 of the movie was a bit confusing. Where is all the bad stuff? I probably disagree with the "clever" manner in which that side of the story is told. I suppose it was done this way so we get the facade of what it must have been like to be the very successful Linda Lovelace. Only to later find out it was just that, a facade. And a very ugly story behind the scenes.
Credit to Seyfried for taking the role. I do like her, and it's always ballsy to take on these types of roles. If the story is true, all the more credit to her. Sarsgaard is again decent but he plays a creep so well it's sometimes difficult to like him. Sharon Stone...couldn't really tell it was her. I thought Robert Patrick as the father did quite well in a minimal role.
Anyway, just hard to review this upon reading the comments of others. If it's true, I'd probably throw it 7/10 just because some big-name stars took on edgy roles and told a nasty story. But if it's dishonest in any way, then that's furthering a lie and no one should really be for that, even someone trying to clean a woman's image.
