Review of Love with the Proper Stranger (1963) by James H — 23 Apr 2004
Love With A Proper Stranger is a really good film but.... it does show its age. If you take into account that the year was 1963 then it is a poignant story of an event that too many people had to face at that time.
At the present moment its difficult to imagine what it must have been like to face what was not only cause for being ostracized but dangerous as hell. Lots of women actually died because of back room abortionists that really didn't know what they were doing.
To also take on the challenge of marrying that one night stand was enormous - I can't imagine, hence marrying a stranger. The story was a little too short for my liking but still solid and Natalie Wood is absolutely gorgeous.
Her character doesn't quite get enough time to blossom. Steve McQueen shows a glimpse of why he was a very good actor and its great to see him in a more personalized role. The supporting cast is memorable and what a treat to see Edie Adams.
She didn't make enough movies in my opinion. If you're looking for entertainment in a small dose and something specifically from the early sixties then this is it. .
