Review of Love, Simon (2018) by Meredith W — 20 Apr 2018
"Love Simon", the first major studio release about a teen gay love story, is an enjoyable movie in itself, but especially for readers of its source material, the novel "Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda", given its meta-nods to what readers already know.
It loses a lot from the novel, especially after its identify revelation of protagonist Simon's secret corresponded, with the movie finishing sooner in the narrative, but what it does recreate is wonderful.
There is a definite John Green feel to things but its story is more touching and heartwarming. It's just a sweet coming of age story about a guy who happens to be gay, without violence, gore, excessive bad language etc.
Nick Robinson is authentically vulnerable as 17 year-old Simon, is forced out as gay and Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel are role-model parents in their compassion.
