Review of Love, Simon (2018) by Gregory M — 07 Jun 2018
"Love, Simon" just made me cry a river! Is it the greatest movie with this theme? It sure is not. There are so many European movies exploring teen sexuality and coming of age in better ways. But, no matter its missteps and mistakes, "Love, Simon" is a very important movie and I'm glad it exists! It works as a rom-com, as a coming of age story, as a teen drama.
It is a trend setter, it is a brave step forward for American cinema. Hollywood shied away from this kind of story for so many years and is only now with this movie that they are taking the fall and make a step forward.
"Love, Simon" is done with love and respect, shines a light on some very important issues of the youth, and actually is a step forward in including more diverse stories in mainstream media. Gay youth is a very underrepresented group of people in these stories, and this sure needs to change.
"Love, Simon" can be the movie that brings this kind of change. It is fun, it is entertaining and it sure brings a lot of discussion on the table. One very powerful scene makes you see the entire movie with a different perspective and is the actual scene that elevates the movie.
"Love, Simon"and what it represents is long overdue! It was about time it came to us.
