Review of Love, Simon (2018) by The3Academysins — 26 Mar 2018
Love, Simon is big, mainstream Hollywood's take on a gay movie, and they honestly did a really good job! Love, Simon is touching, funny, and a very relatable depiction of the struggle of coming out. The American High School drama may seem a little played out these days, but Love, Simon keeps it very fresh. The standard jocks, nerds, dweebs, out-of-touch adults, self-conscious girls and foolhardy boys are all in attendance, but the teenage struggle feels very genuine and real.
Nick Robinson leads as the titular Simon, and he gives an incredible performance. He is a very relatable protagonist, he's charming, charismatic, and deeply vulnerable. Seeing the movie for his performance alone would not be a bad selling point!
The shots are very well done, and the characters are very memorable. I do have a few complaints with the script, and the pacing of the film. Some parts of the film feel really rushed and tacked on, and the script doesn't do a good job of resolving the storyline of the antagonist, and the reveal of Blue was kind of a let-down.
All in all, Love, Simon is a very respectable movie, and one worth checking out.
