Review of Love, Simon (2018) by Davidwashere — 22 Mar 2018
This is a fine movie. Does it have a little too much hype behind it? Yeah kind of. But there are some great qualities to it. It's sincere and doesn't pander to it's target demographic, it has some great jokes and laughs and an excellent supporting cast, from Tony Hale, Logan Miller, Natasha Rothwell, Josh Duhamel, and Jennifer Garner, and some definite emotional moments that will definitely tug as anyone's heartstrings.
There is something universal here and that is very important when it comes with acceptance. However, as much as many would love to continue on praising this film for how inclusive it is, lead actor Nick Robinson, while not terrible, is more passable than outright amazing and could have had better direction, because there are emotional scenes where Robinson is supposed to match those big emotions, but he never delivers.
This also adds to some flat cinematography and shot composition, and there is the cliche during the second act low point where everyone hates the main protagonist, but not only is it trite at this point, it is so unbelievable when we get there as well! Regardless, this isn't terrible but it's not really anything more than just "Yeah that's fine.
" I get why people will love this movie, and if you do love it a ton then good for you. I totally see it. But if you aren't all that interested in seeing it, then you don't really have to honestly.
