Would have still been a pretty enjoyable, run-of-the-mill teen movie if it the protagonist wasn't gay, however most of the appeal is that the movie is a leap forward for gay representation rather than the merits of the film itself.
Many scenes struck me as quite unrealistic and the only character that was really developed was the protagonist.
