Review of Love Potion No. 9 (1992) by Irene C — 26 Feb 2012
Genre = Romantic Comedy, Fantasy: A cute flick with an interesting plot, this was one of the earlier roles in Bullock's career as well as one of her first romantic comedies. She and her lead counterpart, Tate Donovan, undergo quite a transforming makeover that in itself is exciting to watch.
Bullock steals the scenes and, as a result, goes on to have a more successful career. She clearly likes to have fun by mixing serious, dramatic and action roles up with comedies, but in my opinion, comedies aren't exactly her strong suit, as she doesn't seem to be a natural at physical comedy, not like Dan Akroyd, Steve Martin, Gilda Radner or Amy Poehler.
In this movie, however, she takes the understated approach, resulting in a natural, adorable, magnetic persona. Ann Bancroft is also intriguing as the spitting, fortune-telling apothecary. It's a lesser-known romantic comedy that stands the test of time and is a must-see for fans of the genre and/or actress.
Perfect for Valentine's Day.
