Review of Love in the Time of Cholera (2007) by Katie S — 18 Jun 2008
It really wasn't that good. I read the book and it was sooooooo much better with its grandiose, elegant language and storytelling. Where I never found myself bored during the book, I did during the movie, several times.
I also felt like there were several gaps in the plot that I almost overlooked because it was so internalized in my head already. Javier Bardem was sort of creepy, which I guess achieves his purpose, but not his best performance.
Giovanna is just no. Where did they get her?! Fermina Daza should've been soo much more pretty. Benjamin Bratt's performance was one of the better ones, as well as Fernanda Montenegro. One thing that was well done was the sets/cinematography.
The colors were so lush, true to the setting, and the camerawork was great. And for the record, I think this would've been sooooo much better in Spanish.
