Review of Love in the Time of Cholera (2007) by Rebecca D — 06 Aug 2008
This is the type of film that I have been waiting for, both beautifully filmed and entertaining. So many of the recent â??artyâ?? films have been not only slow but terribly dull and lacking completely in any kind of fluid story line. This film however kept me interested for the entire duration; it was an emotional roller coaster, I was laughing, crying and feeling genuinely annoyed in some parts. I normally hate sentimental romantic rubbish but Newell manages not to over do it and keeps it simple.
Newell managed to span his film across nearly 60 years and was helped in doing so by some brilliant make up staff and the acting of both Javier Bardem and Giovanna Mezzogiorno who manage to show the difference in age subtly and well. Having seen Bardem in â??No Country for Old Menâ?? previously in the year I am amazed at the range of his acting abilities; managing to play both parts perfectly.
This is a film, which makes you really believe that love had no bounds even if it is just for the duration of the screening.
