Review of Love in the Time of Cholera (2007) by Arin D — 09 Jun 2009
Never has an actor gone from virile to utterly decrepit in such complete fashion as Javier Bardem in this lush evocation of the Marquez drama. Bardem acts his heart out, all physical 'method' stuff as an old doddering man still lusting for the love of his youth.
He pulls it off, but Benjamin Bratt as his rival - does not. Bratt's awful goatee is present for far too long. Giovanna Mezzogiorno as Fermina was far too restrained, as if she was afraid of her dialogues tripping over each other in her stilted English delivery.
If only they had done this in Spanish with subtitles, instead of the lead characters speaking heavily accented English amidst background Spanish, and hispanic culture all around them. But it was a big-budget studio production after all.
Worth seeing if only for the sets, Bardem, and if you've never read the book.
