Review of Love in the Time of Cholera (2007) by Cristian O — 16 Oct 2009
From the acclaimed novel comes this film about a young man named Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem) who falls in love as a young boy. When he and his beloved (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) are torn apart, she moves on and he pines after her. She returns and gets married, and he persists. Fifty years later, he finally gets his opportunity.
It's a touching story, but given the behavior of Ariza, it's difficult to figure out whether to celebrate everlasting love or look at him like a obsessed stalker. I guess it depends on your mood when you watch it.
The film itself is well-made. I haven't read the book, but most of the reviews I've read have said that this movie pales in comparison. I didn't think it was that bad a flick, so that book must be really good. It's a nice epic romance, but it doesn't really do anything to stand out.
