Review of Love in the Time of Cholera (2007) by Amanda B — 21 Jan 2009
What a disappointment to see such a great opportunity fail so miserably. The book was one of Gabriel GarciÂa Marquez's great literary successes, yet this film reflects nothing of his style of story-telling, nor does it deliver a true level of quality in film-making (they should take some serious pointers from the makers of "Erendira"). Perhaps the makers of this film thought that by casting one of today's greatest actors (Javier Bardem) in the leading role, and then scoring a lovely soundtrack by one of today's greatest voices (Shakira), would automatically keep this film afloat..... I only wish it had. I also feel that English was just 'wrong' for this film. It should have been a Columbian film (perhaps in collaboration w/other Latin countries), and it should have been done entirely in the novel's original language--Spanish... perhaps then the film might have gained the 'passion' that the story itself possesses.
The great mistakes made w/this film were the very same mistakes made years ago w/another Latin literary classic, "The House of the Spirits." Will they ever learn this sad lesson???
