Review of Love & Other Drugs (2010) by Richard S — 10 Jul 2011
A great film, which even with a range of competing plot elements (comedy, satire, romance, historical drama) has more heart than you could hope for nowadays from a mainstream US movie. Tour de force performances from Hathway and Gyllenhaal (with more than a little nudity) drive the story and plot sidelines are wittily handled and never less than entertaining, whilst it mainly avoids the sort of gross out humour that passes for comedy nowadays.
It's been a while since I've seen a mainstream movie with any heart whatsoever so if some people rate the competing multi-strand plot as a failure it is a glorious one which I wish would be repeated often.
