Review of Love & Other Drugs (2010) by Rakeem M — 31 Oct 2011
Very uneven, way in over its head and yet I liked it a lot. It succeeds purely on the charm of the central performances, and they have lots of it. I found the uninhibited depiction of sexuality refreshingly adult and Hathaway and Gyllenhaal were just great together.
It certainly gets bogged down by the heavier material, which the writers clearly didn't know how to address properly and eventually just feels like an afterthought, and I could've done without the Jonah Hill-clone of a brother, but I found that the positive outweighed the negative in the film as a whole.
It's not a great movie by any means, and I completely acknowledge its shortcomings, but sometimes a film just gets to you and you can't help but like it. So sue me.
