Review of Love & Other Drugs (2010) by Elena S — 10 Oct 2012
They shared a relaxed bond that makes you think, here are two people who belong together. There is real-life chemistry between the two of them.
The two stars steam up the screen and are frequently naked in their new collaboration. Two people who fall in love but were not expecting it and not looking for it, and therefore spent quite some time fighting it. Anne Hathaway does a pretty decent job portraying a young woman struggling with the effects of her illness. And Jake, well honestly it is truly difficult to review him after viewing 'so much' of him.
Too bad the movie's a mess, it scampers off into too many directions for its own good. I felt it was held together by Scotch tapes. The film changes tempo several times, throwing almost every genre in it. Also, I got the "been there, seen that" feeling.
The movie is as predictable and ultimately as sappy.
A self-centered, money grabbing yuppie falls in love with a sick girl and learns that money isn't everything.
The other thing I found didn't quite work was Jamie Randall (Gyllenhaal)'s boorish, irritating, pudgy sibling. Maybe he is just there to facilitate raunchy jokes. He is a constant and constantly annoying presence on the screen. All his scenes should have been left on the cutting room floor.
This movie tried too hard to be original yet came off as so forseeable and synthetic.
