Review of Love and Other Disasters (2006) by Jess L — 06 Feb 2013
My first thought when I started watching this was; Why is Brittney Murphy talking like Audrey Hepburn? Then it all became clear. This film looks at the structure of romance stories, films, books etc, and in looking at the structure mimics it in an attempt to validate or reject its basic principles. That is the underlying structure of this film, on the surface it's a guilty pleasure as far as romance movies go. You know this is an average movie but you can't help but enjoy watching it. It's a fluff movie as I like to call it and there's nothing wrong with that. I like the relationships between characters, the miscommunication which leads to humorous outcomes - in particular the hunt for the man one of the characters bumps into in a hotel foyer, which ultimately leads him to the wrong person who eventually turns out to be Mr Right.
Brittney Murphy doesn't have much to work with in this airy role but she delivers an enjoyable performance and pulls off the Audrey accent perfectly; encompassing the icon further through fashion and grace.
Overall not the best film but extremely fun viewing.
