Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Luger R — 07 Jun 2015
Fantastic. Really. Most musical biopics I've seen have too much hollywood in it or consist of an agenda of over glorifying the person or something. I am a huge Brian Wilson fan, and I walked out of the theatre very happy, and I can be tough on movies.
They depicted everyone very well from personality to looks (especially Van Dyke Parks on the latter)! They handled Brian being casted by 2 actors very well by bouncing back and forth between the periods in his life so you do not get too attached to one face.
They filmed some sessions in Western Studios and did a great mixing job on incorporating the real session tapes in with the actors singing. Although the movie did a great job at capturing a lot of the pressure put on Brian, but they didn't mention Capitol's pressure as much as they should have, but at least they touched on it in a couple of lines.
I'm glad they even took a swipe to discredit Brian's "autobiography" (which was basically his psychiatrist writing the book and portraying himself as a messiah for the entire second half of it).
This movie is DEFINITELY worth seeing and they did a fantastic job at mixing (hope it gets the Oscar!) so definitely try to see it in a theatre with good sound if possible!!
