Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Autumn C — 28 Sep 2015
Love & Mercy is a very good portrait of musical genius, Brian Wilson, at two pivotal moments in his life. Eschewing the comprehensive life's story approach that most biopics use, Bill Pohlad decided to focus on the periods surrounding the making of the 'Pet Sounds' album and how he met his current wife, subsequently purging a very toxic individual from his life (ex-manager Eugene Landy). This is a nice change of pace for the tired old musical biopic genre.
Paul Dano is great as young Brian Wilson. He portrays Wilson as a tortured, but brilliant puppy dog of a man that he was with heart and sincerity. John Cusack on the other hand is quite simply serviceable as elder, nearly zombified Brian Wilson. Paul Giamatti and Elizabeth Banks are good in their supporting roles.
