Is there a better American filmmaker than Whit Stillman to helm a Jane Austen adaptation? The selective indie director's dry witticisms and upper-class sensibilities are a sublime match for Austen's period pieces, and the fact that this film is adapted from a lesser known work of her's gives it a novel appeal.

Tightly scripted, and plotted, Whitman sublimely understands prose, making for a movie that's almost more theatrical than it is cinematic. Funny too, with a blend of awkward humor that may even make newcomers have a feeling they stepped into a screening of "Larry David's England" instead.

It's certainly not for thrill-seekers, but Love & Friendship will be among the summer's most talked about films for cinephiles.
