Review of Love & Friendship (2016) by Katie Y — 15 Jun 2016
The movie as a whole was nice to look at, and the score was nice, but it didn't have much of a plot. At all. I kept waiting for something to really happen to pull the plot forward, but it was two hours of a manipulative woman trying to get her way (and I wasn't always sure what she wanted - did she want Reginald or no?) and everyone else sharing their opinion of her. There wasn't a plot, there wasn't a rise and fall of action, and there wasn't an end, more like a stop. I enjoyed some of the characters, or their reactions/opinions to other characters. Acting was fine, cinematography was very different from most period films and I liked it a lot, costuming was good, though I have a few problems with it. Mainly Beckinsale's gowns. One had a seriously crooked center front, another was violently purple, in a hue I'm quite sure they did not have in that time period, with tulle I think they also didn't have. And to top it of the center back of the dress was not patternmatched.
It was enjoyable, parts of it were funny, but overall it just wasn't a quality movie.
