Review of Love & Friendship (2016) by Daniella S — 02 Jul 2016
With more manipulation, this movie feels more like a combination of Dangerous Liaisons and a Edith Wharton work than a Jane Austen work. Although you can hear a young Austen trying out her witty dialogue, that make her later works so enjoyable, rather than love winning out, it is the practicalities of life. Not that that makes for a bad story, it just lacks later Austen works' focus on people coming to understand and eventually love one another.
The movie itself, while enjoyable, is a little all over the place. It takes a moment to understand what is going on and the end feels rushed. However, Beckinsale is wonderful as Lady Susan.
