Review of Love & Friendship (2016) by Dean B — 21 Jun 2016
Whit Stillman and Jane Austen seem like a match made in heaven; it's a pity that this pleasant trifle doesn't reach the heights one might expect, despite Kate Beckinsdale's deliciously comic turn.
The plot is unnecessarily convoluted, the Brits are politely flummoxed, Xavier Samuel is easy on the eyes, and Tom Bennett runs away with his scenes as a jolly nincompoop. Only disappointing if one is expecting a sumptuous, comedic hot-fudge sundae, and gets one of those little vanilla-orange-sherbet cups from grade school (with the wooden spoon).
