Review of Love and Death (2013) by Dylan N — 07 Aug 2009
An amalgamation of Woody Allen's principal preoccupations wrapped in a historical spoof with philosophical overtones. Love and Death shows a definite maturation from the Mel Brooks-esque tone of Bananas, as Allen attempts to juxtapose an incessant parade of gags with some sort of intellectual musings, a craft he would later master in Annie Hall and Manhattan.
For anyone with even a basic knowledge of Russian and French history, Jewish comedy and moral philosophy, this film is well worth viewing both for the laughs and the tongue-in-cheek fodder for thought.
