Review of Love and Death (2013) by Cody C — 28 May 2011
Very influential and funny Woody Allen movie. The zaniness definitely begat Zucker Bros stuff. Even Borat, actually-- especially the beginning. But it also owes SO much to Marx Bros. Most of Woody's lines, you can hear coming out of Groucho.
But that's okay, because nobody was really doing that at the time. It was as much a callback to that brand of humor as it was a rebirth. The only thing that doesn't work for me in this movie is Diane Keaton.
She's just not very good. Her delivery is inconsistent. Sometimes she's very deadpan, other times she's wacky, or too dumb, or too witty. I think the movie would have been funnier if she had been deadpan throughout.
She's just not as good at wearing various comedy hats as Woody is. It wasn't until later movies of his that she really kicked ass. I'll close in saying this contains one of my favorite one-liners in film history: "In addition to our summer and winter estate, he owned a valuable piece of land.
True, it was a small piece, but he carried it with him wherever he went.".
