Review of Love and Death (2013) by Shane S — 22 Nov 2011
Woody Allen's final outright slapstick comedy before moving into the dramedy with the poignant and ever-human "Annie Hall," "Love and Death" is a hilarious thrill ride through Russian high culture, European art films, and the comedy stylings of Bob Hope. Basically, by posing as a psychological and existential drama about a man's quest for religiosity (and how that fails miserably), it succinctly hides its status as a straight-up spoof and makes you work in order to understand the humor.
It's his most hilarious film in terms of laughs, but it's not his best film. But hey - it comes very, very close to that status.
