Review of Love Actually (2003) by Dan H — 02 Dec 2015
It's full to bursting with an all-star cast (Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Martin Freeman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Andrew Lincoln, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman, Billy Bob Thornton, and Rowan Atkinson), but ultimately the film tries to do too much.
There are so many stories to tell that the film is stretched pretty thin, and some of the stories get lost in all the hustle and bustle. Bill Nighy is a complete joy as an aging rock star (even if his tale doesn't really go anywhere), Colin Firth's story starts out really cute but goes too far too quickly at the end, Liam Neeson is great as usual even though his story was a little too schmaltzy for my tastes.
Surprisingly, I felt that Andrew Lincoln's story was the best out of the bunch. Love Actually is very schmaltzy and sappy, but I'll be damned if I didn't catch myself enjoying it a good deal.
Not the best of Christmas films, but worth a watch if you like fantasy romance ensemble films done fairly well.
