Review of Love Actually (2003) by Mimi S — 15 Feb 2014
The same old cheesy boring cliche rubbish; I don't know why people love this movie so much. Everytime I see it I want to vom. Love Actually represents every romantic comedy cliche. Love Actually is about different people and their different romantic predicaments. For a start there are way too many characters and story, which makes the film muddled. The film stars Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Martine McCutcheon, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Rowan Atkinson, Bill Nighy, Laura Linney, Alan Rickman, Joanna Page, Kris Marshall, Chiwetel Ejiofor and many more. There are too many stories to include them all but some of them include finding love again after infidelity (Colin Firth), the Prime Minsister (Hugh Grant) finding love with his aide (Martine McCutcheon), a 12 year old boy in love with a girl at school (Thomas Sangster) and a marriage that has lost it's spark (Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson).
I really can't stand Love Actually; the most irritating thing is that I've seen it loads of times because it's always on TV. It's just so cheesy it makes me want to throw up. None of the stories are that touching or original. The characters are annoying and one-dimensional, but I guess it's hard to really have character development when the cast is so large. None of the performances are really that outstanding. Bill Nighy is one of the few likeable characters and offers the few laughs that this film has.
Guys definitely avoid this film and girls if you like gooey tear-jerkers this is for you. As a girl I don't tend to like rom-coms very much. The only thing I'll give this film is that it's watchable and it gives a mention to Titanic :P. Liam Neeson's character and his son watch Titanic for inspiration. Other than that Love Actually is bloated, lacking in imagination and is too predictable and schmaltzy to take itself seriously.
Grade: D.
