Review of Love (2011) by Black R — 04 Dec 2011
It's a piece of low budget brilliance. The visuals of the film considering the money spent were fantastic. The slow motion of the Civil War battle scene up to the spectacular visuals at the end of the film, it really is incredible what was achieved on such tight restraints. Also, there is an intense sense of isolation and desperation going on. It's claustrophobic in the extreme and the atmosphere created by the film is remarkable.
The dedication of the film makers in a situation like this is unheralded. Reading into it I have discovered that scenes were filmed in his parent's backyard and sets were built just by going to Home Depot and buying the materials needed. The Space Station was built in the driveway by him and his little brother. It's this kind of dedication and determination that makes you great I think.
My only real minor gripe is that although we see several scenes depicting just how difficult he is finding the whole experience it never seems quite extreme and personal enough. We never see moments where he breaks down. There are moments of him missing his family, but the filmmakers spend too much time with the mundane tasks of life in Space rather than the emotional journey he is going through.
Overall its an amazing achievement and it looks incredible considering. It's worth every bit of your time and then it's worth repeat viewings after that. This is film making for the passion of film making and it deserves your attention as a result.
All that opinion and I haven't even mentioned similarities between this and another great film 'Moon' - Ah damn it!!!
