After directing second unit on Winding Refn's highly controversial Only God Forgives, Ryan Gosling moves to the director chair on Lost River, a modern fable set in a forsaken town with nightmare connotations and a strong sense of social responsibility.

On the surface Lost River is a poignant story of good versus the banality of evil. A layer deeper, however, there is a fantastic and ever-so slightly surreal depiction of the struggles of the lower class.

Drawing visual inspiration from Terrence Malick, the antics of Winding Refn and Del Toro's surreal energy (all whom the director acknowledges), Gosling takes a brave - and successful - stance with his directorial debut.

Lost River is perhaps the most interesting art house entry in this year's roster.
